The CISO Ascends From Technologist To Strategic Business Enabler

Over 1 million cybersecurity jobs remain unfilled today, a number predicted to reach 3.5 million in a few years. While consensus seems to exist that there is a serious security skills gap, little research has been done on what specific skills—hard or soft—that are in the highest demand by employers and which ones are overemphasized by jobseekers. Utilizing natural language processing to analyze employer job and jobseeker resumes, this report—the first in a series on different cybersecurity job occupations—examines the role of the CISO. Employers place a much higher premium on soft skills than jobseekers, an indication they are focused on finding CISOs with the business acumen required to work across organizational silos, translate technology into business language, and manage security based on business risk.
